Every spring we get the same question from Denver homeowners filing hail claims: "Should I upgrade to Class 4 while I'm replacing the roof anyway?" The honest answer for most Front Range homes is yes — but the reasoning is more nuanced than the marketing material suggests.
What the classes actually mean
UL 2218 is the impact-resistance standard for asphalt shingles. Shingles are dropped with a steel ball at increasing velocities until the shingle cracks. Class 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent the size of ball survived. Class 4 — survives a 2-inch steel ball at 90 mph terminal velocity — is the top rating and is what we recommend for any hail-prone Denver zip code.
The Denver-specific case for Class 4
Hail in the Denver metro averages 1.5–2 inch diameter during peak storms. A standard Class 3 shingle survives 1.25 inch hail reliably and starts to fail at 1.5 inch. A Class 4 shingle handles 2 inch hail with minimal damage in most cases. The difference is whether you file a claim every 3–5 years or every 12–15 years.
The insurance discount math
This is where most homeowners miss the value. State Farm, Allstate, USAA, Farmers, and Liberty Mutual all offer hail/impact discounts on the homeowners line item when you install Class 4 shingles. The discount is usually 15–25% depending on carrier and zip code.
For a typical Denver homeowners policy at $2,200/year, that's $330–550/year saved. Over the 20-year life of a Class 4 roof, that's $6,600–11,000 in insurance savings alone.
The Class 4 install costs roughly $2,200 more upfront ($10,400 vs $8,200 for a typical 3-bed 2,200 sqft Denver home). Payback from insurance discount alone is 4–7 years. Add the avoided deductibles on future hail claims and the math is overwhelming.
When Class 3 still makes sense
Class 3 isn't bad — it's just optimized for different conditions. Class 3 is the right call if:
- You're in a low-hail zip code (north Denver, foothills above 7,500 ft)
- You're planning to sell within 3 years (you won't recoup the Class 4 premium)
- You have HOA restrictions that don't permit Class 4 textured shingles
- Your insurance carrier doesn't offer a Class 4 discount (rare but worth checking)
What we install
For most Denver clients we recommend Malarkey Vista AR (rubberized SBS-modified) or GAF Armorshield II. Both are Class 4, both come with 30-year transferable warranties, and both qualify for the maximum insurance discount on all five major carriers.
If you're filing a hail claim and your roof is more than 10 years old, the marginal cost of upgrading to Class 4 during the replacement is almost always worth it.
Free inspection any time — we'll tell you exactly which class fits your zip code, your insurance carrier, and your plans for the house. No upsell, no scare tactics. Just the math.
