The most common reason patients delay needed dental work isn't fear — it's confusion about insurance coverage. Here's the basic cheat sheet for the Minneapolis market.
What's typically covered at 100%
Most dental plans cover preventive care at 100% with no waiting period: routine cleanings, exams, x-rays, fluoride. There's no good reason to skip these visits — your plan is paying for them.
What's typically covered at 80%
Basic restorative work: fillings, simple extractions, root canals. You pay 20% out of pocket, plan covers 80%.
What's typically covered at 50%
Major restorative: crowns, bridges, dentures, dental implants. You pay 50% out of pocket. This is where most patient confusion happens.
The annual maximum trap
Most dental plans have a $1,500-2,500 annual maximum. Once you hit it, everything is out of pocket. Strategic timing of multi-year work matters — splitting a $4,000 case across two calendar years can save you $1,200+ in out-of-pocket costs.
What's NOT typically covered
- Cosmetic-only work (whitening, veneers for purely cosmetic reasons)
- Orthodontics (separate rider needed in most plans)
- TMJ treatment (varies by plan)
- Implants (some plans now cover, many still don't)
