Invisalign vs. braces for teens: a Minneapolis parent's guide

By Dr. Hannah Whitaker · April 14, 2026 · 5 min read

Every parent with a teen approaching orthodontics asks me the same question: should we do Invisalign or traditional braces? Here's the honest breakdown.

The case for Invisalign

Aesthetics: removable, nearly invisible, no metal-mouth photos in the yearbook. For socially-conscious teens this matters more than parents realize.

Oral hygiene: removable for brushing and flossing. Much better for cavity prevention than braces.

Eating: no food restrictions. Take them out, eat anything, put them back.

The case for traditional braces

Predictability: braces work with continuous force regardless of patient compliance. Invisalign requires wearing aligners 22 hours a day — and many teens don't.

Complex cases: severe overbite, underbite, crowding all respond better to braces. Most cosmetic-level orthodontics can use Invisalign; severe orthodontic cases sometimes need braces.

Cost: usually comparable now (within $500-1000) but braces tend to be slightly less.

The hybrid: braces then Invisalign

For complex cases we sometimes start with braces for major correction (12-18 months) then transition to Invisalign for final tuning (4-8 months). Best of both — predictable correction with a less visible finish.

The compliance question

The biggest variable: will your teen actually wear the Invisalign aligners 22 hours a day? Teens who lose them, leave them on lunch trays, or forget to put them back in will have worse outcomes than with braces. Realistic parent question: "Will my kid be consistent?"

Pick the system that fits your teen's habits, not just their aesthetics.
