Knob-and-tube wiring in Charlotte historic homes: stay or remediate?

By Jamal Brooks · May 1, 2026 · 5 min read

If your Charlotte home was built before 1950 there's a meaningful chance some original knob-and-tube wiring is still in place — usually in attics, behind walls, and in additions made in the 1930s-40s. Whether to remediate is a real question.

The safety reality

Original knob-and-tube was generally well-installed for the era. The problem is age — 80+ years of thermal cycling has degraded the cloth insulation in most installations. When the cloth crumbles, exposed conductors are inches from joist surfaces. Add modern circuit loads to that mix and you have fire risk.

The insurance reality

Most insurance carriers now require knob-and-tube remediation, especially if revealed during a routine inspection. If you're selling: required by buyers. If you're refinancing: often caught.

Partial vs. full remediation

Most Charlotte historic homes don't need a FULL rewire. Many can be partial — replacing just the attic runs, just the knob-and-tube in certain walls, and leaving original installations behind plaster walls untouched. Cost difference: $4,000 vs $9,800.

The Liberty approach

We do free inspections specifically for older homes. We map the knob-and-tube locations, photograph the condition, and quote partial-vs-full options. You decide what's worth doing.

For Charlotte historic homes, the math usually favors partial remediation — focused on the locations of actual risk.

Free inspection any time. Email us pictures of your panel + attic and we'll give you a starting ballpark.
