Most Louisville lawns are tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, or a blend — all cool-season grasses. The right mowing height for these is higher than most homeowners realize.
The 3.5 to 4 inch rule
Cool-season grasses should be cut at 3.5 to 4 inches during peak growth months (April-June, September-October). When the heat hits (July-August), raise the deck to 4 inches minimum.
Why higher matters
Taller grass develops deeper roots — better drought tolerance, fewer weeds (the grass shades them out), and better disease resistance. Plus the lawn just looks healthier and greener.
The 1/3 rule
Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass height in a single mowing. If your grass is 6 inches, the lowest you should cut is 4. Cutting too short stresses the plant and invites weeds.
Why most lawn services cut too short
Short grass means you can mow less often. Most landscape companies optimize for their efficiency, not your lawn's health. We cut at 3.75-4 inches every visit — your lawn ends up greener and you don't see weeds.
If your lawn is cut shorter than your fingernail, it's cut too short.
