Every Atlanta homeowner with kids asks the same question in May: how do we actually use our backyard this summer? Citronella candles aren't going to do it. Here's the real playbook.
Why your backyard has so many mosquitoes
Atlanta climate + humidity + standing water everywhere = mosquito heaven. Most yards have multiple breeding sources you don't realize: clogged gutters, drainage ditches, neglected planters, AC condensate puddles, bird baths.
Step 1: Eliminate breeding sources
Walk your yard. Anywhere there's standing water for more than 48 hours, mosquitoes breed. Common offenders: clogged gutters (HUGE), corrugated drainage pipes that don't drain, dog bowls, plant saucers, abandoned planters. Fix or eliminate.
Step 2: IGR treatment
Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) target larval stages of mosquitoes. We apply IGR-based treatment to vegetated areas of your property. Adult mosquitoes die out within 7-10 days, larvae fail to develop. Treatment typically lasts 28-35 days in Atlanta climate.
Step 3: Property-wide barrier spray (optional)
For acute issues we add a barrier spray on vegetation perimeter — kills adult mosquitoes within minutes for several weeks.
Realistic expectations
You won't get to zero mosquitoes. But you'll go from "backyard unusable" to "normal occasional bite." Most clients are happy with that result.
The annual approach
Most of our mosquito clients do monthly treatments from May through September. About $99/month for a typical 1/4 acre suburban yard. Worth every dollar for usable outdoor space.
