Garage door spring snapped? Here's what to do (and not do)

By Pete Hawthorne · March 18, 2026 · 4 min read

The most common emergency call we get: "I heard a loud bang from the garage and now the door won't open." 95% of the time it's a broken spring. Here's what to do.

Stage 1: Confirm it's a spring

Look at the springs above the door (torsion-style) or alongside the tracks (extension-style). Spring is broken if you see: snapped/separated coils, gap in the middle of the spring, or one spring visibly hanging lower than the other.

Stage 2: Do NOT try to manually lift the door

This is the biggest mistake people make. A broken spring means there's no counter-balance helping the door open. Garage doors weigh 150-400 pounds. Lifting manually can: damage your back, cause the door to fall mid-lift, or release the cables — all serious. Just leave the door closed.

Stage 3: Use the emergency disconnect if you need the car out

If your car is trapped, pull the red emergency disconnect cord on the opener. This disconnects the opener from the door so you can manually lift it — but still requires significant force without springs. Get help if you can, lift carefully, get the car out, leave the door closed.

Stage 4: Call us

Most spring replacements are done in 60-90 minutes. We carry the most common sizes on every truck. We always replace springs in pairs — if one broke, the other is days away from breaking. Replacing both saves you from a repeat emergency call.

Why springs break

Springs have a lifetime cycle count. Standard residential springs (10,000 cycles) last 7-12 years for most families. Heavy use (multiple cars in/out 6+ times daily) shortens that to 5-7 years. We can install high-cycle (25,000) springs that last 15-20 years for $30-60 more — usually worth it.
